Let me preface this by saying that I'm not usually prone to emotional outbursts. However yesterday was a breaking point and I admittedly lost control. Also this will be a long post so I appreciate the time taken to read and respond.

A bit of background: I am in my mid twenties and recently graduated uni. It took longer for me to finish school than anticipated mostly because of immigration issues (foreign student) and also because I never really wanted to go to school in the first place. In any case, I pushed through, got my degree (B.A. majoring in Econ) and am now working three different jobs (one FT, two PT), all of which are completely unrelated to my field of study.

I long ago made peace with the fact that what I wanted to do would have little overlap with what I studied in school and simply got the degree to appease my parents who bankrolled my study and stay in this country. I have since decided to remain here but pursue other avenues. Specifically I want to start my own business and am working the jobs that I am to build the necessary foundation to do so.

The issue arises because of the diploma itself. My uni recently sent it back to my home country (the permanent address they had on file) and my dad received it. After sending me a picture of it, he called and asked me what I was going to do with it over there and how I could get a copy of my own. I told him that I didn't really need the physical document, which he misunderstood as me saying that I didn't need the degree period (I don't think I do really, but I digress). I guess him getting worked up, was the last straw for me and I just unloaded on him. Basically I told him that he was naive for thinking that a degree meant success and that the piece of paper really was worthless to me.

I then got a call from my mom (who is in a different country at the moment) asking why I argued with my dad. She told me to humor him and to make the effort to please people and I had enough of that too. I told her I was done trying to please people all the time and that's the reason why I ended up in the position that I'm in to begin with. She tried to reason that them wanting me to get my degree etc. was so that they could have time to build a business for me in the country she's currently in. I called bullshit on that as a) I've had no say in this project and b) I'm in a country thousands of miles away trying to make my own way.

I basically told them both that they should only talk to me once they've decided to stop lying to me and themselves and wake the fuck up. My dad today sent me a message along the lines of "be happy with what you have" but I refuse to accept that. I want more out of life and if my parents can't see that then I'm going to associate myself with them as little as possible.

However I realize that my outburst yesterday was a significant loss of frame and a major fuck up on my part. What I want to know is how bad did I fuck up, and how do I move forward. I was thinking of just minimizing contact with them, keeping the little we do talk about to mundane shit and just keeping my head down and getting what I need to done. I'm not sure though. Thoughts?
