Been looking into a career change myself and doing a lot of research. I spent a long time in manufacturing doing CNC, no money or job security there. Still undecided but here's what I know so far.

HVAC guys work 6-7 days a week and they all say 1 year doing it = 5 years wear and tear on your body. Not my style. I work to live, not live to work. The solitude of the job appeals to me but not at that price. A lot of climbing in attics and under peoples houses. Being on call, etc. The real money is in controls.

Electrician is the same deal unless you get in the union. 6-7 days a week. A union apprenticeship is a long and process to get accepted. Heavy algebra on the aptitude test and no calculator allowed. You need letters of recommendation and could spend years on a waiting list jumping through hoops with no guarantee of being accepted. If you do get accepted you won't make any decent money for 5 years. It's handled by the IBEW. Also, union workers are lazy, petty, backstabbing assholes with a severe entitlement complex. Total prima donnas. They're basically turbo boomers regardless of age. I've never worked in a union shop that wasn't a hostile work environment full of incessant whining and treachery. They might as well be women.

Plumber is more union shit if you wanna make any real money. In the private sector I don't think they pull 6-7 days a week though. It's a pretty standard schedule from all the plumbers I've known over the years. Plan on working outside and coming home with muddy boots and a sore back everyday. It's hard on your body like HVAC.

CDL truck driver: The only acceptable way to do this is if you have your own rig. The reward for that is total freedom. All the truck drivers I've known were miserable. If a company trains you they own you for 2 years per contract. The industry has a ridiculous turnover rate because it sucks. The owner/operators though, they seem real content. I wouldn't mind having my own truck and making my own schedule. I'd work a lot at once and take a long time off.

After looking into all these careers I think they all kind of suck in their own ways. I might just go back to my pre CNC skills which is auto body. I should've stuck with that instead of going into manufacturing. I'd be sitting pretty now. The way that works is if the book says it takes 2 hours to paint a fender and you do it in 30 minutes you still get paid for 2 hours. It's not uncommon for guys to have 150 hours on their check having only worked 40. The only limit is you and your skills. It's a lot different than getting paid by the actual hour both monetarily and psychologically. Auto mechanics work the same way but you're gonna have to buy like 40k worth of tools.

Whatever you decide just know that money isn't everything. Having a lot of it is nice but not if you work yourself to death and are miserable 6 days a week. Look at all the pros and cons of each one and make the best decision for you.

I'd be a plumber so you can run your own business. I'd assume that HVAC you'd have more commercial clients and therefore tied to a larger company.
