It's an old song, but I think the sentiments are timeless. The point of the song is that it's much more difficult for women to go their own way than men. I know a woman from China who immigrated to America not too long ago. She moved to America when she was 19, and she dedicated her entire 20s to immigrating to America because she loves it so much. She went back to China at 31 years old and visited her high school friends. They called her a total loser because she has no savings, no property, and no husband or children.
I think she's a complete winner. She went after her heart's desire, and she achieved her dream. She was crushed by how her friends treated her. That is exactly the point of "Just a Girl" by No Doubt. Women are practically precluded from going their own way in modern society. The women of the Old West probably had it better than modern women in that sense.
