I have been a Scoutmaster for 15 years and have both sons and daughters. My daughters were always jealous of all the fun stuff we would do in Boy Scouts, and they absolutely hated Girl Scouts. They didn't want to sit around a do crafts while trying to survive all the cliques that the girls formed. They wanted to go camping and play with knives, fire and guns like their brothers did. Every once in a while you would hear about a single Girl Scout troop that would go camping, but the main problem is that there are never any moms that want to take a group of girls into the woods. They would rather go on a trip to Mall of America or some other safe and bug-free trip.

Our council is starting to ramp up to be able to implement having girls join. At first I was very worried about it because Boy Scouts is one of the few remaining male spaces that boys have today. We let our boys be boys... not try to force them to be defective girls like the get in school. Also, the behavior is less restricted because there are no girls so they can be themselves. Having girls around would totally change the atmosphere. So I read the details of what is being planned and found that they are planning on having separate units for boys and girls in order to preserve the same-sex spaces for the program. So for cub scouts they will have girl's dens and boy's dens. For Boy Scouts they will have boy's troops and girl's troops.

I'm really hoping that this original plan is not compromised once it is implemented. I don't know how they will solve the problem of the moms being scared of bugs and not taking the girls camping. The moms just don't understand why knives are cool. So I can see them complaining that the girl's troops are not being served equally and demanding that the girls and boys be mixed.

One thing I do know: that when you are canoeing into the wilderness, after 3 or 4 portages you generally don't see women anymore. Bringing boys out there to experience the satisfaction of striving for a goal with their brothers and then resting once it has been achieved is amazing. Sitting out by a lake, cooking northern that you caught a few hours ago, looking at more stars that you ever imagined were out there when you were blinded by the city lights is outstanding. Teaching boys the joy of manhood is a great thing. I hope we don't lose it.
