the second one when he throws her down he can actually justify hitting her in the face much harder, since the first defensive strike failed to stop the aggressor so its perfectly reasonable and justifiable that the second defensive strike after a further attack needs to have more teeth to it, i.e hurt her so much she doesn't continue.

if it was my son, i would tell him he had carte blanche to strike her in the face when she was on the floor the 2nd time.
