Male victims of sexual violence in rural Malawi: the overlooked association with HIV infection

This study was one of the first to examine men’s experiences of sexual coercion within committed, heterosexual relationships in sub-Saharan Africa. One-tenth (10.4%) of men experienced sexual coercion. The odds of being HIV positive were 7.2 times higher among men who had experienced sexual coercion. Sexual coercion was the strongest predictor of HIV positivity. Male victims of sexual coercion in our study were more likely to be married (90% vs 77% of non victims). And 8 times more likely to be victim of partner physical abuse.
