In the UK the Police started demanding access to the "rape victims" mobile phone, as the chat logs and text/calls logs could imply if she was making a false allegation; hence, committing a crime.

The rate of rape reports dropped instantly, or rather, women who reported rape later retracted their statement, rather than have their mobile phone sifted through by a Police officer.

I think that says it all.

Nothing is private for the police; if they need to search through shit, they will. This is only if they get a warrant. A simple accusation definitely is not enough for a warrant. I know it's not a good answer, but it really depends on the persons and situations and if they're suspicious enough for a warrant.

Even when police get a warrant, they have to state in the affidavit exactly why they believe a search warrant is necessary, and the scope of what they expect to find. This can lead to secondary search warrants. For example, if they perform a warranted search on your computer for emails but end up finding evidence of a drug deal, they have to apply for a whole new search warrant. Keep in mind that they don't need a search warrant for some things. There are exigent circumstances (they believe death or serious injury is imminent), items in plain view, or items with no reasonable expectation of privacy. Laws may vary state to state, but if an officers walks up to your car and can plainly see something illegal in your car (drugs in a cup holder), then that's considered plain sight. If they find incriminating evidence you posted on social media (you bragged about raping a girl on Facebook), then there is no reasonable expectation of privacy because you posted it online for the world to see.

Any accusation made to the police should not be accepted at face value without evidence. This goes for any crime. If it's just my word against hers, we're at a stalemate. You may not be arrested, but almost certainly detained while an investigation is completed. This would likely mean going to the police department for an interview, as opposed to going to jail. Depending on the outcome of these initial interviews, you may be released or taken to jail. This is when officers would apply for a search warrant.
