While writing this chapter, one of my concerns was that some of my arguments could be used to justify the distasteful theories of misogynistic men’s rights movements. Although it’s important to note that not all men advocating for men’s rights are misogynistic, a peek into associated meetings and online forums reveals that many view women as “entitled bitches” (their words, not mine) who are only seeking to use men at their disposal. According to movements like MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way), the world is “gynocentric” and women have unearned “privilege” due to being propped up on a pedestal by that “corrupt” feminist movement. There is some overlap between the men’s rights and the “incel” (involuntary celibacy) communities. Incels are an online subculture of men who are frustrated at their inability to obtain sex and genuine affection from a romantic partner. Some within the community go as far as advocating rape to gain sexual gratification from women. Certainly, someone who hates women, regardless of whether he identifies with either of these social movements, can use evolutionary psychology’s points as a justification for his opinions. I understand why some women, in return, detest evolutionary explanations for behavior and any evidence for sex differences, as a general rule. But denial of these truths only weakens the argument for gender equality. If a person doesn’t fully understand the evidence, they cannot argue why it isn’t acceptable to extrapolate sexist ideas from it.
