Especially at first, keep mostly quiet and to yourself other than with your bunky if you get along. Let people approach you.
1. If your bunky is Muslim, drape a cloth over the toilet hole when not in use
2. Do not spit out toothbrush/toothpaste rinse into the sink, spit it in the toilet. Also on a lesser note try not to make that “hocking loogies” sound.
3. Don’t hide your paperwork from people unless you want to raise suspicion.
4. Don’t ask too many questions.
5. Don’t guess or ask about people’s charges.
6. Don’t stand too close or directly behind people, especially near those sitting down.
7. Carefully close doors quietly when people are praying.
8. Don’t speak too loudly (people catch sleep at random times).
9. Don’t joke too much or loudly about things that implicate people even if it’s past stuff already dealt with (aka don’t dry snitch)
10. Don’t disrespect the runners (aka don’t bite the hand that feeds you)
11. Wipe the toilet seat after pissing
12. Wipe the sink after it drains
13. Don’t get too friendly or comfortable with C.O.’s
14. Don’t take a shit when your bunky is asleep.
15. Don’t be too generous; people will automatically attempt to take advantage of you and very casually at that.
16. Don’t step on the bottom bunk bed whether you are coming off or going up to the top bunk.
17. Two things you should never say: “you’re a faggot”, “suck my dick”. Refrain from calling someone a “bitch” as well.
18. If you have any shot at it, be a runner. It is by far the best job. You are basically a liaison between the inmates and officers. Both sides need you so both sides are invested in being on your good side. Plus you get hella freedom. When everyone else had to sit on their beds for head count I was cooking (i.e. microwaving elaborate prison meals). When we had a count after yard time, I’d take a shower while everyone else was on their beds all sweaty. That and the time one of the inmate’s girlfriend threw a carton of Newport’s over the fence of the janitorial work detail he was at and he brought some back and gave me some were the closest I got to freedom there.
19. NEVER take the shoeshiner job. No number of ODR (officer dining room) food trays is worth it.
