A new Norwegian study has looked at what happens to children's ability to trust their parents after a divorce – and how children fare mentally and physically when they don’t maintain good contact with both parents.

This is exactly the kind of thing I came to see on this sub. We should spread this like never before. The amount of children who barely have contact with their father is huge!

I always wanted contact with my dad. My dad didn’t want contact with me. Growing up I remember running to meet him. I always sought him out while he was working on his cars. Lawn work, etc. always the same thing: “go inside “. Meanwhile my sister got all of his attention.

When they divorced the distance became even wider. He’d only pay half the child support. Today my sister won’t have anything to do with him. She hasn’t visited or called him in many years. Now, he can’t even enough of my attention, even though we live very far apart. But every phone call first and last is always about my sister.

Fast forward to last year and I now understand why he was the way he was with me. Even though he always claimed me as his one and only son. I am not his son at all. Due to ancestry, which I did for the “geek” in me. I discovered a new half sister, through my real biological father. I am a clone of my bio dad. Sadly, he passed away on my birthday in 2015, so never got a chance to meet him.

While I get why he treated me the way he did and the child support thing. As a boy it was very confusing to call me his son and yet want nothing to do with me. He’s in late 80s now. So I won’t be pushing the knowledge that I am aware of my real dad. But the heat ache I suffered all those years by his treatment of me, I’ll never forget. One of the memories I have is being yelled at to go inside “I don’t need your help”. Only to see my sister there helping him. What that did to me is years of therapy.

Thanks for sharing! You are certainly not alone in this kind of experience.

Being abandoned as a child often leave you with some kind of emotional gap. Gaps needs to be filled. The filler of choice is often the exact opposite of what you really need.
