To my knowledge, yes they are. In 2016, the men's games brought in $1.9 million less than the women's games. Not sure about the 2019 World Cup numbers, but from 2016-2018 they were generating more revenue than the men.

That's because that run of years was pretty much specifically chosen to exclude any men's World Cups, and it was ALSO chosen so that it included at least one women's World Cup win by the women (2015).

The men qualified in 2010 and 2014, but did not qualify in 2018.

To give you an idea why this matters, men's World Cups earn significantly more money overall, usually 40-50 times as much as the nearest women's World Cup. 2014 earned the men 4.3Bn dollars, but 2015 only earned the women 73M dollars (or the men earned 58x as much revenue). The players get a set percentage of the revenues (9% and 13% respectively), so the fact the men's team made the round of 16 in both 2010 and 2014 means they earned enough income in those two years alone to offset the ENTIRE DECADE for the women's team.

Even with 3 World Cups to their credit, the women were so far behind after the first half of the decade, they were only ever working themselves out of the hole.

Not quite sure, which is why equal pay is such a big deal to the women's team. I believe some of it has to do with T.V. viewership, since the men's games typically get more views.

The issue involves the relationship between the USSF and SUM (owned by MLS) which, not surprisingly, puts MLS first, second and third in all business matters. Let's say you are Tampax and you want to do a deal to sponsor the women's side because you have a new product for athletes. Can you do it? Nope -- not unless you also are a sponsor of the men's side and MLS. There's no money for MLS in a deal that just works for the women's side.

So, for example, if Coke pays a hypothetical $100 for sponsorship rights they get MLS, the men's side and the women's side for that deal. Now let's say Pepsi would pay $70 to sponsor just the women's side, because they want the exposure that comes from the World Cup and Olympics. Will SUM do that deal? Nope -- no money for MLS in it, and it will make Coke rethink it's deal. Maybe Coke says -- fine we will pay $75 for the womens side, 20 for the men and 5 for MLS.

The USSF is not an innocent trapped in the middle. If you don't think they would happily discriminate against women and girls what's your explanation for the Development Academy?
