1) Universal credit is a monumental fuck up. For both genders, my towns homelessness has gone up since it's introduction, and every one I've spoken too has said they've had massive issues gaining even just enough money to get by. But that's a whole different topic..

2) Now, I may be wrong on this point because I've not experienced either, but while "survival sex" does sound like a horrific thing to go through, it is at least an option. It does bring money in. What option do men have? Nothing. It's just one of the many reasons our homeless rate is much higher. Like I said, I might be wrong but I'd probably prefer to be fucking strangers to at least get a roof over my head and food rather than sleeping in a tent, begging on the streets, starving and that vulnerable. Women get priority over men when it comes to homelessness here anyway, but even without that, they have the chance to pick whatever one they feel is less horrible, prostitution or street life. We don't get that, instead we get homelessness only and a much harder chance at escaping that life. Homeless male suicides were common in my old town.

While I've never had to deal with any of this myself, I've heard the stories first hand from those who do, and it's fucked. Our government is a massive fuck up and these reforms do more harm than good. UC is a fucking joke, they've taken away money from a lot of legit cases to try and counter the few fraudulent cases. Now it feels like their solution to homelessness is trying to kill off the homeless. It's a fucking disgrace in this nation but it gets swept under the rug. This issue is just a single root in a whole tree of failures in this country right now. Similar issues, like the sharp rise in sex for rent just paints a picture of what the future is like here. Exploitation is going to thrive in the poverty sweep.

So what exactly is "universal credit?"

It sounds like a form of welfare payments.

Well, one of the problems with welfare is, let's say you qualify.

They give you an apartment, food, and a little bit of cash.

Now let's say you don't want to stay in dependence.

So you decide to get a job at your local Mickey D's.

Well the first crummy paycheck you get from McDonalds, the welfare department is going to look at that and say, "aha, you're working now so you don't need our help."

And all of your welfare benefits stop, and you're back to being homeless.

Like there's no way to "ease" out of poverty.

So one way recipients try to get around that is by doing illegal things, because it's not on the books, it's under the table.

Either prostitution or drugs or whatever.

Now I'm not going to say women have it better, because sleeping with random people sounds gross.

But at least they have that OPTION.

And prostitution is alot lower charge than drugs.

They don't put you in jail for years for prostitution, maybe 1 night or 3 nights, and then they refer you to social services.

Whereas if you try to sell drugs to survive on the streets, you're looking at 5-10 years.

And the drug trade is particularly brutal.

People get killed over $100 drug debts.

So your only choice as a man is to stay on dependency.

There's no way to "work yourself up."

The minute you accept a paycheck, your benefits stop.

And it's not enough to live on so you're back on the streets.
