The advice center wanted more money. Now she personally attacks a Basel district manager.
Violence is the origin and still core business of the Basel men's office. The private institution advises men with conflicts in the partnership. But that's not all. Meanwhile, one in three men seeks help on other issues: men who can not afford their alimony, who want to reduce their workload in favor of the family, who fight for custody of their children. The need for assistance is growing, as a glance at the annual report shows. But it also shows that the counseling center is financially on the limit.
Before Christmas, the box office was so empty that the men's office was dependent on an emergency loan from the canton in the amount of 15,000 francs. But the structural deficit is 40,000 francs, says CEO Gaudenz Löhnert. In an interpellation, SP Councilor Kerstin Wenk called for equal treatment of men's office and women's counseling: the latter receives an annual contribution of CHF 380,000 from the state for around 600 consultations a year. The men's office, on the other hand, only receives project-related subsidies from Basel City; last 40'000 francs with just over 400 consultations.
In their interpellation response, the government showed little hearing for the concerns of the men's office. Violence counseling is still the focus of the counseling center and this will be compensated, it says. The report barely touched on anything else. The men's office seeks salvation on the offensive. In a statement, the board and the managing director attack the competent equality authority. They speak of a "blatant unequal treatment", of an "obsolete role model" and of an office manager who wanted to cover up the unequal treatment.
At the request of the bz, government president Elisabeth Ackermann announces an interdepartmental working group to examine "additional support" in favor of the men's office.
