I am absolutely petrified of a false rape accusation.

It goes without saying, I never want to end up in a he-said, she-said situation. All across the media today you see people's lives ruined by an accusation done out of spite, or for personal gain. I started college last year, and not a day goes by where I go to a party and don't think about how my future could be forever altered. Whereas before, going to a party during high school I would look forward to having a fun night and unwinding with friends, but now I'm so worried that a girl will accuse me of something I didn't do. Of course it takes a monster to ruin another person's life, but I really am scared of it happening to me.

I suppose I'm so scared of this happening to me because I have everything to lose, my future career, my friends, my family, my enrollment in my university. The FBI says the rate of "unfounded" rape cases in the United States is 8%. it may not sound like much, but if you take into account the amount of rapes reported in 2017, 135,755, 10,860 of those were false. That means 14% of the total reported rapes were false!

I think the main catalyst for my fear happened right after I started college. I went to a party at an apartment just off my campus and was playing Mario Party with some people in a bedroom. All of a sudden most of the people left the room leaving just me and another girl in the room together. I had been drinking, but at that point I was buzzed, nowhere near drunk. I tapped her knee for a second to get her attention to see if she wanted anything to drink, and she exploded. I admit that I was trying to get laid that night by getting her a drink and striking up a conversation, but I never expected what she did. She just starts screaming "WHAT THE FUCK IS YOUR PROBLEM YOU ASSHOLE". At this point buzzed me was freaking the fuck out, "what the hell did I do" ran through my head. The best solution I could come up with in my dazed state was to simply run. I grabbed my coat and ran out of the party back across campus to my dorm.

For the next 2 months after the party I lived in a perpetual state of fear. Not knowing if I would be dragged out of class by the police or arrested in my dorm. I lost almost 10 lbs from worry over that time. After 2 months of fear I realized if I was going to be arrested it would have been done already. Thankfully I managed to salvage my grades which had dropped considerably during this time and ended the semester with 3 A's and 2 B's. I want to transfer after my second year to The University of Washington, and the thought of that opportunity being ripped away from me almost made me cry.

This post went on way longer than it should have, but I just needed to say it somewhere, even the internet. Thank you if you read all of it.

TL;DR: Every time I go to a party I'm scared of a false rape allegation, I have everything to lose including my relationships and future career, 14% of reported rapes are false accusations, and I was almost falsely accused of rape my 1st semester of college.
