I used to use high end Gillette cartridges. They do a pretty good job and are very convenient. However, I'd been told that a double edge safety razor (DESR) would be better. I'm lucky enough to have a good job and never was bothered by the cartridge prices, but I'd also heard that the DESR blades were much cheaper. Even so, I never switched because it would take time to research what to get and because I was happy enough with the cartridges.

Now that Gillette shit on all men, I don't want to give them any more money. So I looked at r/wicked_edge and decided what to get. I don't want to endorse any particular brand, but I went with the "Rockwell Razors 6S". It cost $85 at Amazon and there is 6C for about half the price. (Which is less than some packs of Gillette cartridges!)

I got it and tried it today: Holy fucking shit is it nice! Skin feels good, really close shave, no cuts or scrapes. The razor is solid and feels like something that will outlast me.

I'm sold and wanted to let you all know to consider trying one. The Rockwell I got is pretty nice, but I'm guessing that other brands will be about the same. Obviously, get high-quality blades because even the best ones are only like $1-$2 per blade. (The Rockwell 6S came with 5 Swedish steel blades. If anyone has a strong recommendation on blades, please share it!)
