Remember when Barbara Boxer (D-CA) did the same thing?

She handled it better.

Yeah I'd agree with that. It's still so petty though

I work for an airline. I don't know about Qantas, but our boarding passes print LASTNAME/FIRSTNAME. Generally, there's no indication of Dr., Mr., Mrs., or Miss. So, generally, we call everyone Mr. or Ms. no matter what degree they might have. Honestly, I do that with the flight crew, too. I don't say Captain Lastname, I say Mr. Lastname.

I've found that most people have zero problem with not being addressed by their title in the 2 seconds I interact with them. If they do, I say, "I'm so sorry Dr. Lastname." Then simply call them Sir or Ma'am from that point on.

The fact that she felt she needed to make such a big issue of this probably has nothing to do with the airline employee at all. I'm guessing it has been a hot button for her with someone else in her life, and she's pushing that on to strangers she interacts with. She does need to tone down the sensitivity a lot, but she probably also needs to talk to whoever in her life is making her feel inadequate as a doctor.

DOCTOR EVIL!! I didn’t spend 6 years in evil medical school to be called “Mr.” Thank you very much

A phd holder isn’t a real fucking doctor in the first place. It’s a title that some academics use.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

PhD literally stands for doctorate of philosophy degree.

Medical doctors and PhD holders are equally doctors. Md stands for medical doctorate degree. They both use that same word, doctorate. It's not some bullshit academic dick measuring, they both have the title of doctor. Your opinion on the matter doesn't affect reality.

And JD literally stands for juris doctorate. No any lawyers that call themselves Doctor?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's their title to use or not. They have every right to do so as they've earned it weather they choose to or not.

Also you called out PhD holders. Move the goal posts again. Just shows you can't defend your original point.

[–]khuddler 8 points9 points10 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Well there's Medical Doctor, and then there's doctorate in anything else. Y'know like engineering, biology, people who you want to have advanced knowledge of things. If you tried to go through life avoiding anything made by a PhD because they're not a "real" doctor, you're gonna have a bad time.

[–]Just_the_facts_ma_m 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I know many people with doctorates, and absolutely zero go by “Doctor” outside of an academic setting (like traveling)

[–]khuddler 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know many people with doctorates who prefer to be referred to by their title when someone asked them to select it during registration and they chose "Dr." Yay anecdotes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My mom is an MD and my aunt is a PhD and they both go by Dr when they feel like it which is usually any time they're in a formal enough situation to be referred to by last name. They both also wouldn't be offended by this situation.

Moral of the story is a) anectdotes mean nothing and b) if THEY earned that title YOUR opinion on when it should be used doesn't really mean shit
