"Berlinah Wallace, 48, hurled the corrosive fluid at Dutch engineer Mark van Dongen in Bristol in 2015.

Fifteen months later he ended his life by euthanasia in a Belgian hospital. He was paralysed from the neck down and had lost a leg, ear and eye.

At Bristol Crown Court, Wallace was found guilty of throwing a corrosive substance with intent."

Well this title is a bit misleading. She was found guilty of attacking him with acid but she was found not guilty of murder as he later died by euthanasia in Belgium. The issue was if he had his life ended by euthanasia was she guilty of murder as the practice is not legal in the UK. It is likely a man would have also been found not guilty if the roles were reversed. (Edit: formatting)

Yes and no. At the end of the article they make and interesting point about British law: "they can be convicted of murder if their acts can fairly be said to have made a "significant" contribution to the victim's death. "

The example they give is of stabbing someone, who, fleeing the attack is hit by a car. In that case the attacker would be guilty of murder.

That she intended to do him serious harm is beyond doubt, and it is fair to say, absent the attack, he would not have chosen euthanasia. I would argue that her acts made a significant contribution to the victim's death.

Either way the title is misleading. It makes it sound as though the woman murdered her ex-boyfriend with acid. You're correct that someone can be found guilty if they contributed enough to their death. But whether it did or not I feel that their gender didn't really play into the ruling and this post doesn't belong on the sub.

[–]Captain_Swing 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Fair point about the title, but less than a year ago a British man was convicted of manslaughter for psychologically abusing a woman until she committed suicide.

I suspect that if the genders had been reversed, the attacker would have been convicted of at least manslaughter.

[–]Twisted_Coil -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well here's my reasoning. It's obvious that the acid attack contributed towards his death. But I think the reason she was cleared was more due to the complexities of their relationship. It said in the article that they had both alleged abuse from the other long beforehand. And I think the question of whether he gave the acid for her to drink muddied the waters enough that they felt she'd done it out of self defence/ was justified etc. It's fair enough if you believe gender was the reason but I personally don't.

[–]Captain_Swing 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fair point. I don't see how the accusation that he gave her the acid to drink is plausible though. According to The Guardian article, She bought it, without having a plausible legal use for it.

And: "Van Dongen was so worried about Wallace after they split that he contacted the police and an officer gave her a harassment warning."

Also: “Wallace is undoubtedly a manipulative individual who abused Mark throughout their relationship. She repeatedly threatened him when they were together and even assaulted herself – claiming she would report that her injuries were caused by his hand."

She's an appalling, abusive person, who carried out a pre-meditated attack. I honestly think if the genders were reversed, the attacker would have been convicted of at least manslaughter.

The real proof of the pudding will be the sentencing. Having read the sentencing guidelines, she should be looking at, a minimum of 16 years, though technically she could get life.

The example they give is of stabbing someone, who, fleeing the attack is hit by a car. In that case the attacker would be guilty of murder.

Again, false, they say CAN be guilty of murder. It isn't black and white.

More details here:

His father, Cornelius van Dongen, said he wanted to return to a "normal life" but was told by doctors there that his paralysis could not be cured.

"The fact that he couldn't move his arms was the straw that broke the camel's back," he said.

"He completed his application for euthanasia. He said that 'my life has come to nothing and there is nothing left'.

I wonder how many lives has been destroyed here in Europe thanks to the cancer that is mass immigration, African and middle eastern immigration to be exact.

[+]010ROTT1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link

Probably less than that of mass colonization of the world by europe.

Shots fired, literally.

India is still using the railroads the British built. Colonization was beneficial.

[+]010ROTT1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

There were benefits to it, specifically infrastructure, thats true. However to say colonization was beneficial just because of that would be wrong. Not only did it take many lives it also partially ruined the culture of those peoples who lived there.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The purpose of colonization was profit. It wasn't profitable. That's why they pulled out. No great slaughter occurred. That's a lie. I'm not concerned with lesser cultures being dissipated. That's probably for the better actually.

Good example is the British putting a stop to burning wives with dead husbands.

[–]SeaBass1898 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Don’t forget the cost of the western imperialist policies in the countries the immigrants come from.

[+]010ROTT1 points 8 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

What costs exactly. Sorry cant seem to understand what you mean. Could you elaborate that?

[–]SeaBass1898 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Kinda just going off from what you mentioned, but specifically things like interventionist policies in the Middle East.

The US meddling in these foreign affairs for the sake of oil, power, or whatever, ends up exasperating the refugee crisis by destabilizing these countries.

There’s also things to consider like the countless civilians who died due to these policies, hundreds of thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan, not to mention the deaths caused by our drone strikes.

[–]Kinerae 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This article mentions one. That is definitely enough to condone all immigration from the east. Jesus what does that even have to do with sex-based inequality?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Surely in a case like this, we need to adapt a "Culpable Homicide" law, where she's ultimately found guilty for reducing the mans quality of life so low, that he had no choice but to end it. She's responsible for that and I hope she see's at least 15 years inside. Vile cunt.

[–]hastur77 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As an update, she was sentenced to life in prison, possibility of parole after 12 years.

[–]Hwga_lurker_tw 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

We need a sex offender registry for people like this.

[–]0Epicenter0 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This isn't in anyway a sexual offence.

[–]Hwga_lurker_tw 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is under the context of domestic assault. They were in a relationship and she doused him in acid. Any future partners have a right to be warned.
