As a woman, you can "save" your sexual/romantic encounter as a wildcard and use it at any time in the future for whatever purpose: to damage that person, to get attention, get victim-status prestige, jump on a bandwagon, be part of a popular "movement," etc.

There's a few possible reasons.

They may have felt too embarrassed to say anything sooner, or thought there would be negative consequences like no one would believe them and it might end their career, but now that other women are doing it they feel confident enough to say "metoo". These are the ones who are genuine.

There's likely some "regret rape" ones, who went along with it at the time but now they feel established enough to decide that it was non-concesual because they felt some pressure or only did it to get a part.

Then there's probably a few who just make it up to boost their profile or further an agenda.

I think that there are probably many who fit into category 1, but also some that fit into the other two.

I wouldn't have such a problem with the movement if there wasn't blanket non-acknowledgement of categories 2 and 3.

Here's my take on it. Metoo exists in an economy of public attention. At first it was easy to create the drama to hold people's attention with a few big names commiting big misdeeds, but the public consumes these stories quickly. To keep outrage going they needed more and more stories, which required more and more lax standards for what constitutes the "crime".

That's why the accusations being made have gotten progressively weaker. You can clearly see it too. In just a month we've gone from accusations of sexual "assault" to "harassment" and now "misconduct". We've gone from Harvey flashing women to Louie masturbating in front of women with their clear and expressed permission. To now Franco getting lambasted for getting a consensual blowjob from his girlfriend she admits she just wasn't super into.

The hype train is running out of steam.
