This doesn't sound like incompetence. It sounds like an orchestrated decision to withhold evidence in order to secure a conviction to appease ideologues.

Had he killed himself before going to trial, the evidence would have remained covered up. It sounds like his legal team could have been more pro-active in chasing up the evidence, which clearly existed since people own phones with messages on them that may or may not be relevant.
