It's like Princess Atalantis and Young John from Free to be You and Me. Or like the Bad News Bears getting used to the girl pitcher. We're still playing out these 1970s fantasies of gender equal competition where girls kick ass and boys just have to deal with it. How's that working out after a generation?

It's in the age range when it's not unusual for girls to eclipse boys on the playing field, because their growth spurts have started earlier. Her son isn't so much being a good little feminist auxiliary as accepting what's obvious to any child that age in a PE class.

Once their own growth spurt starts, and their physical strength and mental aggression gets channeled into sports, having to compete with girls puts boys in a bind - "girls can kick your ass, deal with it" vs "you should never ever hit a girl".

What if a video surfaced of some boy just lighting her up? You know, she comes around the corner on a jet sweep, and she cuts back up into the hole, and he just Dick Butkus's her. Maybe he gets a penalty, maybe he gets thrown out. Even if he doesn't, is he going to get excoriated and face all sorts of vituperation online and in person for his misogyny. Did he put a little extra because she's a girl? Is he engaging in toxic masculinity on the field? So it's a catch-22.

The toxic you-go-girl triumphalism presents boys with games they can't win. If they beat the girls' team, they're regarded as bullies. If they lose to the girls' team, they're cast as the Washington Generals in girl power viral videos.

If the men win, they get no credit and don't crow about it. If a woman wins, the feminists will gloat and generally be as disagreeable as they know how, which is very.

Now, it used to be that women didn't think they had to compete with men. When I was in high school, everybody knew the boys could beat the girls at basketball. It was just how the world was. Nobody ever thought about it. I didn't figure I was somehow better than Gloria because I could out-rebound her. Boys and girls were different things, like birds and algebra. Nobody was mad about it.

When boys and girls did compete, like when Susie and Art were seeing who was going to be valedictorian, Susie was trying to beat Art, not the male race. When girls made better grades, which they generally did, the boys didn't feel oppressed and talk about how their self-esteem was a quart low and the teachers were against them. Girls just did better homework. It was how things were.

Now it's different. Women are always challenging men at things. When a lady golfer wants to play against the men, that's exactly what she's doing: Saying, "Gals can smack that little ball as well as guys, and I'm going to prove it." It's not individual. It's challenging men as a subspecies. Or at least that's how the media package it.

Of course if women challenge a man, or all men, the men do start thinking in terms of who's better, when left to themselves they wouldn't have. That's what competition is for: to see who's better. And if the woman loses, which she's mostly going to in sports, then women are going to feel humiliated and quietly mad. Why do it?

Of course the competition is implicitly rigged. The rules are different. If the men win, they get no credit and don't crow about it. If a woman wins, the feminists will gloat and generally be as disagreeable as they know how, which is very. The curious thing is that men don't want to compete against women in the first place. For men, that used to be one of (many) pleasant things about women: They were people you didn't have to compete with.

As a European, I had to Google 'Flag Football' - which led to some initial confusion which was soon cleared up.

Parents around the field (on our side and even passerbys) seemed to have the same thoughts.

My dad was visibly annoyed. "This is going to be unfair!" he laughed. "Damn liberals!"

If she isn't making this up then this woman is a fucking mental case who has absolutely no idea about her son's inner mental life.

This is a kid who's going to be on anti-depressants by the time he's 17 because of all the years he will have spent trying to shoulder the burden of his mom's crazy.

And then it hit me. Because I've raised my son honestly and without prejudice (the best I can), because he wasn't brought up in a world of over-the-top sexism and because he is just fucking smart (sorry, gotta brag) he already knew what I told him. He was already over it.

Yeah. In the unlikely event this bears some passing resemblance to the truth - he isn't over it and he won't be either.

The post seemed pretty even-handed to me. The main point of the post was how he (post is by the kid's dad) was happy that his son didn't think it was any worse to lose to a girls' team than to another boys' team, which I agree is a good thing. As for pride, he was discussing the kids on the winning team and their parents.
