The author echoes my argument and frustration in dealing with this topic. I've argued long and hard that the ONLY salient characteristic when someone walks into your shelter looking for help is that they are apparently a victim. The minute you trot out sex or race or sexuality to use as a filter to determine if they deserve services, you're playing victim Olympics and using irrelevant concerns to determine who gets help and who doesn't.

Women present more with injuries and are at a higher risk of death, due to men being physically larger and more capable of visiting damage on their partners? Enact medical and security protocols so that those who present with injuries or possible threats to their life are secure and cared for regardless of what sex they are. Whether that person with the potential injury or threat is the 1 in 4 male, or the 3 in 4 female, they all deserve to be protected and treated. Telling the at risk male he's out of luck and has to go back home to his abuser, because you've made some sex-based judgement of need is nothing more than basic bigotry. In fact, it's out and out cruelty.

Gender and sexuality neutral programming for DV is FAR, FAR, FAR overdue in North America.

Well, women tend to use weapons more often in domestic disputes I believe. Also, according to a Harvard study involving a large sample of couples showed hat women initiated 70% of domestic violence disputes.

Well, women tend to use weapons more often in domestic disputes I believe.

Yes, they do, but another point is that when we talk about injuries, the stats come from our police forces who only see roughly 1 victim in 8, so there's a chance the proportions of injuries they see in shop don't translate to the larger pool. Men might simply get their injuries treated without ever mentioning domestic violence, and so they don't get counted as often.

I was simply trying to head off one of the most common "but, but, but ..." arguments used. Right at this moment, the organization that handles all the women's shelters in my province, the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters, uses that specific argument on their FAQ page of their web site, arguing that because women are injured or killed more often, there's a justifiable reason why there's virtually no male beds in the province. It's a bullshit argument, but a common one, and so I thought I'd head it off at the pass.
