Speaking of Operation Overlord, the allied were quite lucky. Rommel was absent, because his wife had her 50th birthday at the time. And the only other person who had the authority to call in the tanks, was Hitler himself. And Hitler usually woke up around 10 am. So the tanks were deployed only in the afternoon.

Weather was not perfect, and even the allies were so careful, that they've dropped their bombs half mile behind the German lines. Not to hit their own. So the allies had little to equipment to fight tanks. Imagine 124 Panzers engaging on that beach. The Germans had quite heavy tanks, so I doubt wet sand could support them. So even if they were above the barbed wire, they would be mobile pillboxes. Possibly with flamethrower. And unlike artillery, they could spot and kill landing craft relatively close quarters. No radioing in, and shooting in the water blindly from the distance. One HE round could take out 30+ people easily. There were DDs deployed by the allies, but those were immensely vulnerable in the water. Hitting a Pz IV on the beach from the wavy channel is impossible.

Here is a footage of a DD. Being in the sea, and not in a lake was a huge difference. First of all many Sherman sank during launch, because the waves hit above the canvas, and the whole machine went down. So if you can hit the canvas when the tank is declining from a wave, you puncture it below the waterline. And if I were a driver, under no circumstance would I close a solid steel hatch on myself. But of course good luck is necessary to victory.
