I'm not sure I agree with some of Karen's arguments, assuming I'm hearing them correctly.

"Confidence and commitment levels are in fact lower for men who work flexibly than those who don’t. Again, this is potentially a result of the perception challenges they face."

It isn't that men don't want to work less, it's that society (and women in particular) demand they work more:

One respondent said: "The [flexitime] arrangements worked as agreed, but I have felt judgement for using them," with another admitting that "while opportunities exist, the environment that management creates makes it difficult to participate."

Yes these attitudes can be changed, considering that wage-slavery is a recent invention and that some primitive tribes don't even have a word for work. One could even argue that they will have to change given technological trends. The idea of men working all day while the woman gets to stay at home was born during the industrial revolution. Prior to that time men had a much more balanced lifestyle and much more contact with their children.

If women are going to compete with men in the workplace then we should have the same flexible schedules. We sometimes forget that human beings are not supposed to be serving markets, markets are supposed to be serving human beings. If a "free" market demands a lifetime of drudgery it is not free at all.
