I just took a human sexuality class last semester, one topic was that couples in today's time aren't in a hurry or don't push to have kids like in the past. It's a noticeable link in the levels of stress that comes with having a kid or kids. Also like it was mentioned in the article, women are choosing careers over families; so women are spending their most fertile years working instead of birthing, and by the time they are ready to settle down, finding a guy their age is limited; women like men a little older, so those women who are trying to settle down at 40 are competing with women in their 20s and 30s. Men also believe it or not, want kids, they will easily choose the younger more fertile woman over the aging and possibly infertile woman. It's basically a result of your own life choices.

It's kind of funny, your average woman will say true happiness is having a family or being a mother, while feminist will say this is outdated ideology. But now you have older feminist women complaining about how they aren't happy with there life because not having kids or being a mother; the ideology they spent their lives trying to disprove comes to be the one of the reasons why they are unhappy.

I agree with the headline, but a lot of the article is something I'd be interested in debating.

A lot of the article is ridiculous.

IMO people in developed countries don't have children for two big reasons:

  • Increased availability of birth control making sex consequence free, to the point that many people disconnect sex from pregnancy.

  • Our high level of wealth, making it extremely expensive to raise children and live the life we want.

My wife works and I directly benefit from a change in womens lives over the past 50 years, I also have two daughters so I want the best for them.

BUT:

I think a major reason is feminism for the fall in the birth rate.

If opportunities were not there for women then I think a lot more of them would become mothers. Because they can go to Uni and do all the jobs men can do they choose to do that.

Secondly society does not support the family as in man woman and children so that is a problem. In fact they discourage it.

Thirdly the role of women has changed without changing or giving men corresponding opportunities.eg Custody of children in divorce proceedings to men. Too much emphasis was placed on helping women and not enough on helping men

Women a er not punished by society in the way men are which is also a problem. For example in child matters and custody, the courts and legal system support women but not men.

Fourthly, there are fare more female graduates who will not marry down.

There are a whole host of other reasons but a lot of it comes back to feminism.

Also men have been so berated by society, they are not appreciated at all and are despised by the media and government. Consequently as has happened in Japan men have given up. They no longer give a F***.

I agree that feminism has a lot to do with it, but feminism is a luxury of the wealthy. It's easy to say women shouldn't have to stay home when you have a dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, and washing machine. If you don't have these things, you have to have someone do them by hand, which can take days. Not to mention more mundane tasks like cooking.

I agree my wife would go nuts if she did not work outside the home. I think what has gone wrong is that society did not do nearly enough to help men. I think society should have treated the changing roles as a family / couple issue and not just concentrate on females. I suspect it is too late now. I also think society is far too lenient on females. They have been dominating at college for 30 years but on the whole have not much to show for it. No large companies started by women, no major inventions not much enthusiasm to get involved in politics. They dominate the public sector which in many parts is not efficient. They do not get punished by the courts in the same way as men are etc. i think the out come will be the female childless rate will quickly move to 50% and keep on falling.

I guess she doesn't realize that 20% would be 1 in 5 women.
