The plot, even though it doesn't show it, is that the woman he gets training from is able to train him because she has already gone through the exact same experience.

I don't remember it being shown as "nice and fun".

I saw it as hard but necessary work.

It was less sad than a normal death, but since he didn't really die I think that makes sense.
