Women invented a ratings system in the US (1920s-30s). The more dates with others in the same league a man or woman had the higher the perceived value, some women would limit the number of dates they had with any one person, to keep their numbers high in order to inflate perceived market value.

"Spook" is a racist term

These feminists truly are despicable people...

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It might not have been racist then, I think the modern equivalent is creep and these were not feminists.

No, it was racist back then.

This definition of spook is basically the same thing as a creep

  1. To startle and cause nervous activity in; frighten:

It's much more likely that they were referring to that, then a black person. Presumably, these white college girls that made this system in the 1920, weren't going to college with black men, or dating them so wouldn't have made up a classification for them.

I don't think that spook was used as a racist term until later.

"Inflate their value in the market system" aka not seem like a slut. Men with a high rating would have seemed valuable to other women due to preselection. Women with a high rating would merely seem like used goods

Edit: I am mistaken, serves me right for not reading the article

No, the higher the date count for both sexes, the higher the rating.

It was about perceived demand. This is why some of them would artificially inflate their count by minimizing the number of dates with one person.

I see what you mean now, I misunderstood the concept

Ok :).
