Actually I'm very sure when attractive females in certain positions come into the spotlight, people talk about them just as much. Michelle Bachmann received and receives comment often about her looks. Michelle Obama does too. Female athletes, like Serena Williams and Amélie Mauresmo et. al., often get remarks about whether or not they look too manly(read:ugly) or not feminine and attractive enough. In fact, you don't even have to be attractive to be talked about, you just have to be female and come into the spotlight for any reason, and an article will be written on how attractive and fit you are and the clothing you wear.

Similarly when unattractive females come into the spotlight, people go crazy, as if its against natural law for a female to be ugly: case in point: Ben Carson's wife. People don't talk about ugly men as much (except for maybe trump, they make fun of his hair a lot)

All this being said, I don't think it should happen from either side, especially in politics, because it really takes away from their message and the things someone is trying to accomplish. Or it can unfairly(maybe wrong word here) add to their popularity.

Now in all honesty I don't really care and I think it's all in good fun. He is a good looking guy for a politician, people want to talk about that, especially people not inside Canada. But I can imagine the needless outrage if similar remarks were made about an attractive female politician.
