Thanks for sharing this. My long-time love of Dear Prudence is justified.

I think one of the key points that she gets at here and in her previous article on the topic (linked at end of comment) is how this system of campus tribunals that has popped up is harmful for everyone. For those accused, expulsion is a very serious penalty, especially when it comes with a record that can essentially block someone from getting higher education anywhere. It is unacceptable for that kind of judgement to be made based on the "preponderance of evidence" standard and without due process. For victims, on the other hand, it can be frustrating to see a serious crime treated instead as a campus rules violation, and it is problematic that rapists may simply end up back in their hometowns. Schools should provide counseling, both to rape victims and to students troubled by non-rape sexual encounters and leave the policing to the police (with the caveat that police officers should be better trained in handling sexual assault cases than many seem to be).
