This discussion brings to the table the struggle that both men and women have to put up with in a matured industrial society. Due to Bateman’s Principle, men are given the unfortunate role of the limiting factor in many cases, and women have a desire to preserve this right to be selective and choose their partner(s), or otherwise lose their gains won by the feminist movement in earlier decades (men cannot take such aggressive and competitive measures to strong-arm mates, unlike in our evolutionary past, yet these desires may still resurface in the female or male psyche as BDSM fetishes, for example).
While men have an inherent need to find a suitable partner, women may become more selective and thus a disparity results with both sides adhering to an irrationally human emotional desire or disdain.
Women will often bemoan sexual tension and flirting or advances that males have between them (even subtle advances) as “sexual harassment,” “entitlement,” and “not being taken seriously” to defend their right to freedom of choice (they should have freedom of choice, and they do not choose to want or not want any given partner, it is a biological drive), but will often ignore the real disparity of the male population as a result (stable marriage ages are moving farther and farther from the age of the peak of desire, for example, causing frustrations). It may be argued that the male population may unfortunately have to be subject to both intense sexual desires along with increasing frustrations and expectations in order to preserve the inalienable right of females to choice over their mates (in my opinion, they should still definitely have this right), however, many venomous attacks on males for trying to find a mate, get to know someone, or even for having sexual needs and trying to find a partner is unwarranted.
Arguably, anything that is "desired" that a person goes after can be perceived as an "entitlement." Anything a person feels that he/she should have and actively goes after can be considered from an outside perspective as "entitlement," yet I do not believe that is is wrong to have desires or to inquire about fulfilling them, or even working to pursue them - only it is wrong to force them. This is a fine line, as many women enjoy being pursued or will only subject themselves to dating after a sufficient amount of "chasing."
I feel that it is difficult for people to discuss this openly as it brings forth many uncomfortable truths about gender identity and sexual dimorphism. In my opinion, sexuality is not necessarily static, but rather may change over time with one’s personal identity and emotional desires. Identity develops over time, and, being that sexuality is intertwined within this, sexuality preferences, desires, and even kinks may change as well. Genetics may influence but not determine identity, and environmental pressures also help shape identity, as the utility (which is often only subconsciously realized) of taking on certain identity traits becomes clear.
As with our political system (a 2-party system), a well-defined chaotic system with certain characteristics driven by outside pressure inevitably collapses to a dual-attractor system, and is described within the tenants of chaos theory. Similarly, gender dimorphism began to develop over millions of years as gender specialization became a more efficient means of rearing young as well as providing security and stability (for another example of the benefits of specialization, note the gains brought about by the Ford assembly line model). Both attractors (male and female genders) catered to the outside evolutionary pressure of the need to pass on genes.
This gender dimorphism is not without problems, and has come under much fire in recent years along with industrial progress and social movements. Entitlement and expectations of both sexes towards their biologically separate sexes as well as periodic deconstruction of gender identity increases as the dual-attractor system is no longer driven by the need and desire to produce offspring (in industrialized societies, there is an obvious trend towards less reproduction which keeps population in check and in equilibrium) and thus begins to collapse into a single-attractor system (sexual identity blurs). As gender identities begin to slowly blur and expectations increase in industrialized countries, homosexuality may become more prevalent and accepted as an alternative orientation as individuals feel less obligated to cater to the growing and often restrictive expectations of their biologically opposite sex and religious institutions.
Arguably, one of the largest issues that women come across in the dating world is maintaining body image and fighting for acceptance in a world driven by sexual imagery and exploitation. Culturally, socially, and perhaps biologically, men are driven to pursue healthy women of certain body-types, leaving those with unacceptable body-types and health without a partner. Expectations may intensify in industrialized societies and may lead to frustration, causing an influence on sexual identity and preference.
For men, expectations are different; often to be providers, leaders, confident (even when it makes little sense to), interesting, protectors, “mind-readers,” and so forth. In a world with increasing equality, being these things relative to others becomes more difficult and a sort of “arms-race.” As with the needs of men, these desires are, perhaps, culturally, socially, and even biologically ingrained within the psyche of women on a neurochemical level (on average). The differences in desires may, perhaps also be attributed to biological sexual dimorphism developed in our evolutionary past and through Bateman’s Principle.
This mechanism explains why, as noted by the federal government, male homosexuals may prefer toned muscles and healthy body image more so than female homosexuals, and why there is a strong statistical correlation between obesity and lesbianism, but this may be hard to accept because this theory threatens the integrity of rhetoric on the part of feminist, MRA, and LGBT communities. Biologically separate desires are retained while sexual orientation is not necessarily retained, and many are not willing to accept that personal identity is fluid and may change with environmental pressures and utility on some level.
