Noiva do Cordeiro, which translates as Bride of the Lamb, has a reputation for its strong female community after its founder, Maria Senhorinha de Lima, settled in the town when she was branded an adulteress and exiled from her own church and home in 1891.

At least according to the Catholic Church, that would constitute a "dark past".

Elida Dayse, who organises visits to the area, said: “It looks as if the majority of the population are women, but it’s partly because the men leave during the week to work in the city.” However, some of the town’s women fear that an influx of men could destroy their distinctive way of life

imo, that would be a "dark present" - the general assumption that men would be detrimental to the community.

um, yeah. looks in that article to be Obedience based upon gender.

No, just a case of yellow jornalism

But the BBC Brazil talked with three villagers, and they assured that the reports published abroad are unfounded.

The population of the Bride of the Lamb, according to them, is not composed of "600 unmarried", but for about 300 people, men and women, in similar proportion.

Edit to add: Well, in fact there’s something "dark" about the town in the article: In the past, in the absence of the town males on weekdays (working in Belo Horizonte) residents of neighboring towns taxed the women as prostitutes.

If I remember correctly they kick their boys out at 18. the reason because The pastor a the town back in the 1800's set super super strict rules on women so they collected together and worked all the men out to keep it from happening again. No source, I just remember reading it somewhere.
