As is so often the case these days, i didn't bother going past the first couple of paragraphs. First, it's Alternet, second, it's by Lynn Stuart Parramore, that loony woman who hassled Trader Joe's for playing The Stones' "Under My Thumb" (by coincidence i am, as i write this, listening to Ellen Foley's cover of the same group's "Stupid Girl," a song which would probably give Parramore a well-deserved heart attack) and third it treats us to boners such as this one...

"Polls show that only one fifth of Americans identify with feminism, despite the fact that most believe in equality of the sexes."

Gee, most believe in equality of the sexes, yet most don't support feminism. If Parramore had an honest bone in her body she'd be using this as evidence that feminism isn't about equality of the sexes!

Young people in particular seem wary of feminism that can sometimes seem too self-absorbed, too eager to smack down dissenters.

Did...did she just rip on feminism?

Edit: This is actually not a bad read so far, I'm at the beginning of page 2.

The American feminists in my classes seemed more interested in simplistic slogans than philosophical complexity, more inclined to attack than to engage.

Final edit: Eh. She's more picking apart how splintered feminism has become and that some people are losing sight of what matters. Surprisingly little "those non-feminists should know better" rhetoric, though.

Feminism is surely responsible for the fact that these women are able to voice their opinions publicly with such confidence, and live in a world where they don't feel they "need" any movement to protect their rights.

In school, you probably heard about middle-class reformers like Susan B. Anthony, but not the Lowell mill women.

The Lowe Mill women had nothing to do with feminism (the word isn't even mentioned on the wikipedia page for them, not "women's movement" although "labor movement" is).
