I am 65 with a low retirement. I moved to Savannah from Wisconsin to marry my wife about 17 years ago.. Things went well for quite awhile. A few years ago I wanted my wife to contact a camp Lejeune attorney. I knew she had a strong case as her father was a 30 year Marine who kept meticulous records of his service that I had looked over. He noted as many as 5 stays for him and his family there. And he ended up passing from a benzene related illness. My wife kept saying no and I continued to press her. At one point I call some lawyers and after explaining asked them to call her directly which they did. She then said ok. I helped her initially by helping find her fathers medical records etc. After a few months I began to notice a decline in our marriage. All the paperwork from the suit was no longer in sight and she essentially stopped asking me anything about it ( very unusual ) I had never made an issue of it. It wasn't my father and I never expected a dime from it. As time went on he behavior became extremely concerning. I would wake to her screaming in my face from literally inches away. Over some of the most petty issues imaginable. And when I asked her about it later I got nothing but denial, changed narratives or outright lying. I later found out that I had married a narcissist. A really bad one. But it's another story. a couple years later. And after some very extreme torment that included isolating me and getting her family to hate me and trashing my character by making a false police report saying I abused her ( 65 years and I have nothing like that in my history. I actually worked in a prison for 20 years as a Psychiatric Care Tech and abusing woman is akin to pedophilia as far as I am concerned. And so far out of the realm of possibility for me it's ridiculous . The torment I faced for the last years has been something from a horror movie. And I am sure she was trying to get me to off myself. Fast forwarding I was blindsided with a divorce. When I moved here I left everything behind. Including friends and family. And she owned this house which she always professed was mine too. ( I knew it wasn't even before I knew Georgia law ) But she always promised me that she would not make me homeless. And everything it's fine. People grow apart and need a divorce. Although I can not understand how someone can lie about another for any reason and I told her she didn't have to) So now this is nearing mediation and I do not have a car yet. I lost mine a couple years ago after we bought her a brand new one in 2018. She had, for two years promised me her mothers car when she passed so I waited an old 2008 Civic with low miles. Her mom passed and left a decent estate which I am guessing she got at least 50k from. And the car. Never came to me. Even though I offered to match any offer. Not given the chance ( I figure it's part of a NPD strategy to isolate and strand me here) as I said the torment has been EXTREME. But I am getting ready to fill out the financial statement. And after reading hers she pretty much claimed that I have not paid her a damn dime since I moved here. I have fixed or replaced everything here for over a decade. Heat pump 3 times, dryer, stove, roof, paint etc etc etc. I have given her money every time she asked. I paid all the taxes when I was working. I helped her buy that car giving her 2k for the deposit. And I have paid the 200/month insurance on it for years. I have always tried to keep the house in good shape in case I died so as not to leave her with a mountain of BS to deal with. Always had her back. I have come to the conclusion that she is trying to press for a divorce before a settlement is made. And the settlement is the reason for the divorce in the first place. She really won't need my income anymore. It has been at least two years since filing and she is acting with a sense of urgency right now. And I am ok with everything except the prospect of homelessness.. I make about 1200 a month before medicare. I do not have a living wage and could not make it alone. I am sure I gave up my chance to own a house when I left WI and came here and helped her pay for her living. I have a couple grand in the bank but I need to get a car. She will not let me see her financials although she is likely hiding something. I am not sure about the settlement and I know inheritance is off the table. But she won't even offer the 2 k I gave her for her car to help me get a car to get away. I even offered to sign off on everything else if she did.. Is there anyway I can find out if a settlement was awarded? Can she effectively hide that or have a sister take it over. Any advice? Obviously a lawyer just doesn't seem possible to me. I would just like to get it behind me without being homeless. Thanks for any help you can offer..
