Separated for over 6 months now and slowly working through the settlement agreement (it's an "amicable", no-fault divorce in a state requiring 1-year of separation for no-fault) and have been worrying about what to do with her car. It's a 2017 semi-luxury 3-row SUV with 115k miles, financed through the beginning of 2026 at 0.99% in my name alone. Carvana says they'll give me $7-8K, and I still owe $10.7K. Could probably break even with private party sale. I believe I have to carry the insurance, since I own it. This is a risk I'm becoming less and less comfortable with. Currently, she gives me money for the monthly payment, but I have to ask for it and I don't like doing that. My vehicle is paid off but is getting old and I'm going to need another soon. My options would appear to be:

1) Have the car payments and insurance payments set up as alimony thru maturity date, and then sign it over to her. (This was my idea after weighing all factors, but her attorney has advised her against this.)

2) Deduct the owed amount from her buyout (I'm buying her out of the marital home), pay off the car, and sign title over to her.

3) Require that she re-finance the car in her name, only. Her credit is now good, so i believe she could secure a loan, but it'll be a much less favorable rate, she doesn't need a 3rd row anymore, and would like better gas mileage.

4) I take the car, use it until it makes sense to get rid of it, and she gets her own car all by her big girl self.

What do y'all think?
