Two things stand out that I found interesting, but was not able to read the original study, yet, so I am just going by what was cited:

  • a) "the better your relationship is the more your girlfriend is attracted to you"

Was that correlation found in that way or could it also be the other way round:

"the more your girlfriend is attracted to you the better is your relationship"?

  • b) "So, if someone cheats it probably has much more to do with them being unhappy / relationship dissatisfaction."

Is this female only or gender independent?

Disclaimer: I am definitely opposed to all the garbage that can also be found on TRP - however I like to analyze / discuss things.

Analysis:

The given studies (as far as I could read the abstract / what was cited) do not disprove TRP-principles completely - however only if those are read / understood in a certain context:

First of all "Alpha" is not meant to be the muscular cave man superman or super rich guy (even if many understand it like that), but is always contextual:

  • The cool hip-hopper "10" guy playing in a famous band might have a really hard time in a metal club.

So "Alpha" means having the highest value in a given social situation based on the rules of the social environment. This is easiest seen in high school, where some cliques seem to have higher "status" / value than others.

And obviously every women values different things. That said, is there an scientific explanation out yet for the "attraction to pop stars / sports guys / etc."? Would love to read some background on that.

That definition out of the way:

A TRP could argue to a) that relationship satisfaction goes down and nagging (arguing about not important things) goes up - when a guy stops being an "Alpha", where in this case "Alpha" means the qualities that attracted her in the first place.

And the same seems to be true for men, too - if what they valued in the first place was e.g. the youthfulness.

And then the logical conclusion for a TRP from a) is that b) being less-Alpha leads to more cheating.

That obviously is not a nature-given thing that only applies to one gender. However the general idea that if you don't work on your relationship and yourself and keep those traits that led to the relationship in the first place, that it can get difficult, is quite likely not completely wrong.

Again - I do not want to defend TRP, just show how core ideas can be valuable, while the whole generalization thing is problematic.
