I believe that as girls/women we have an inner voice, an alarm, an alert - whatever you want to call it - that’s designed to keep us safe. It’s a primitive thing and it’s there to protect you.
It’s triggered in all of us at some point. That first ever moment where you realise that there a lot of predatory men out there. I’m sure you can all remember that first time, and usually it’s when we’re pre-pubescent.
I heard a young girl, about 16, talk about how she was uncomfortable around a certain adult man, but she was worried about “offending him” by telling him she was uncomfortable..... perhaps she misunderstood etc.
I told her, don’t EVER doubt yourself. If you’re wrong, so what? Some feelings get hurt? Why is your comfort less important than his?
That voice tells us to watch ourselves when we’re alone at night... to avoid situations... to seek out other people... to make ourselves safe. If someone makes you feel ill at ease, whether a stranger or not - trust yourself, and understand that a moment of offending someone is better than a lot of regret.
This inner voice has been quashed and diluted in recent years by NoT aLl MeN and the libfem tendency to centre men in their activism. Don’t allow this to happen - HVM will not only understand, but they will be the ones to voluntarily cross the street if they see a lone woman ahead of them.
If we didn’t need it, we wouldn’t have it.
