The samsung odyssey+ just released recently, I'm considering upgrading from my vive and oculus for increased resolution and reduced screen door. You could potentially wait for the pimax 5k or 8k early next year, those have a very high fov and lighthouse tracking.

My biggest recommendation would be to see if you have a VR arcade near you and go try a few of the VR games( one of my favorites being Super Hot VR) . As far as headsets you have lots of options, if money isn't an issue and you have a good amount of space then I'd recommend the HTC Vive , there's lots of great games on it and with a high-end PC it'll give you the highest quality VR experiences that you can enjoy. The oculus Rift is also pretty good but the Oculus Quest is around the corner , so if you would consider buying a rift, waiting on the Quests launch early next year might work out better for you financially .

I also really enjoy the PSVR and because I'm not rich I bought one the tracking isn't as great as with the Vive but if you already have a Ps4 then you have the hardware for it and there are some pretty cool demoes and games available to it . I actually have had a lot of fun with the PSVR , It's just the Vive was my first gaming experience and it spoiled me. Astro Bot Rescue mission jsut came out for the PSVR and the demo for the game that launched with the PSVRs Game room app was one of the first gaming experiences in decades I've played which made me feel like a little kid again . Also the PSVR has Super Hot VR..which again.. is fucking amazing.

If you are looking for AR I would recommend you wait a year or maybe 2 a lot of headsets are in production and while I am absolutely in love with the Magic Leap AR headset right now it's still a very early environment and the competition in that space is going to heat up in 2 years. I tried Angry Birds FPS with the MAgic Leap and it felt fucking magical . Dr. GordBots is also a really great AR experience. IF you can find someone or somewhere that has a magic Leap headset you owe yourself to try it . People have been telling me for years that AR is the future but I didn't believe it until I tried the Magic Leap .

So in summation: In terms of VR I love the Vive, really enjoy the PSVR, The Rift is cool but I'd wait on the Oculus Quest. In terms of AR I absolutely love the Magic Leap but the whole AR headset ecosystem is still very very young and the best content and headset for it won't be cemented for another year or 2 in my opinion. With that said if you can get your hands on a Magic Leap you owe yourself the chance to try it.

I missed the final part of your question the best thing about VR and AR gaming is it's immersiveness, my favorite moment when watching people enjoy VR or AR experiences is that moment a person forgets that what they're seeing isn't real. It usually only lasts a second but it's that moment someone tries to grab onto a virtual wall, when they take a wrong step and panic that they might fall to their death (Walk the plank VR) , Seeing how someone reacts as a Scuba diver being lowered into the ocean and then the panic when a virtual shark shows up ( Ocean Descent PSVR), On the Magic Leap they have an early AI demo called MICA and people would talk about how they found themselves mimicking what she does because of how realistic she seems . I remember playing Superhot and the first time a level loaded with an enemy pointing a gun directly in my face, my heart actually dropped, I'd never experienced that before and my brain had to resolve how severe this situation was. We're not quite at the matrix level yet but one thing people don't realize is how directly VR and immersive gaming taps into your more primal brain . when someone is properly immersed in an experience the fear, excitement , , and feelings they feel in an experience are heightened because you have placed them into a virtual world constructed with your virtual rules and for a second you can make them feel anything..... I'm a fan of immersive gaming if you couldn't tell.

I just got an acer mixed vr headset for 100 bucks used. People are dumping mixed vr left and right to upgrade.. nothing wrong with mr, just cant justify dropping 500 big ones on a mid ground system when i can get something decent for alot less. Time to level up your bargaining skills to get into vr on the cheap.

My setup is a Lenovo Legion gaming PX with GTX 1070Ti + HTC Vive I bought last year. Yes there is still noticeable pixelation but once you are in the game you do not notice anymore. VR P*rn is pretty great too once it is at 4K resolution.

Okay, I have a Vive and have done some indie dev for VR. First big piece of advice is to wait 6 months if you can manage. The Vive released almost 2 years ago now and is soon to be made obsolete with the next gen Vive that should get an announcement before years end. The Oculus Quest was announced recently, and it looks rushed to be honest, though likely a good marketing move. If you can manage to wait, not only will you be saving money considering the price drops we're seeing on the next gen hardware, but it will also be technically superior.

Personally Im looking to upgrade to the next gen vive once it launches based on the new controllers alone, and they have yet to say anything about the new headset, but the expectations have been theorized. It should get a resolution bump, foveated rendering, wireless, inside-out tracked, lighter, cooler, etc.

AR is too early to invest in, its underwhelming still and the software is a decade behind. Though bear in mind that once AR takes off it will make VR obsolete, as the ability to transition between a fully opaque to fully transparent HMD (head mounted display) means that future AR will also be able to do current VR.
