If you've always had dogs, you have no idea what it's like to not have one.

Dogs prevent you from living a life on your terms. You always have to let them go out, you have to worry about their medication when they get old, you have to get it shots, you have to get it licensed, you have to deal with the smell and hair all over the place and shit in your yard which dog owners are completely oblivious to.

Dogs are filthy animals, and they shed all over whether dog owners admit it or not, shit, piss, and vomit all over the house at some point, and you constantly have to rush home to make sure you let the dog out.

You turn your back and it's in the garbage, you look left it runs into the street on the right. It chases the neighbors cat, or bites the neighbor for fun.

Dog owners always seem to say, "Wow he's never done that before" when it draws first blood on you.

If you have a partner, what happens to the dog when you break up?

And that's why I don't want dogs. They interfere with my life, smell, shit, piss, get sick, throw up on my laptop, constantly need attention, constantly need to be let out or in, constantly prevent me from just going sailing for a week or chooses to bite the mailman for its personal amusement.

You visit your friend that has a couple dogs. Dirt on the floor, kibble all over the kitchen, smears on the leather couch from its snot and drool, a weird musty dog smell everywhere, and they seem to always be sticky somehow.

Owners can't see it. But I sure as hell can, and I don't want them, I have a hard enough time cleaning my own shit off the rug.

Instead I have a mint plant. His name is Steve. He's a clone, because Steve has the common courtesy to die every year and come back later reborn like a phoenix. Steve has never once stopped me from going to Vegas on a whim.

I was raised by a single mother. I didn’t believe I’d be any good at parenting. Got a vasectomy at 23. Looking at my friends, it was a solid decision.

No I don't regret not getting married or not having children.

I can list off all the assets I have but I don't believe that's important. Bottom line is I have zero debt. My house and properties are paid off. I have zero credit cards. I'm in my mid-forties and I'm semi-retired, I work when I want to.

Sure I could work harder and make more money but why? I have almost everything I need, actually more than I need. Almost all of my friends that are married with children are in deep debt and will be working until they no longer can.

Stay single and focus on yourself and you'll be amazed what you can accomplish without the burden of having a wife and children to support.

They tried to get me to drink the Kool-Aid about how great kids were and married life is but I never swallowed it.

No, I don't regret it.

The abnormal is not the absence of children in your life. What is truly abnormal is doing what society or other people dictate to you.

That said, the really important thing is that you should ask yourself if you must be a father. From there a man must be consistent with his principles and ideas of how his life should be.

Postscript:

I am 47 years old, since I was 16 I decided not to have children and every day I am happy with my decision.

When a woman tells me that it's because I have not really been in love, I smile and go on my way.

Being a father is not for everyone. And there is nothing wrong with it.

Before turning 24 I wanted to get married and have children. When I turned 27 I got a Vasectomy. Best $500.00 cash investment I've ever made. Do I feel like my life is incomplete because I'm child-free? Hell no! Bullshit I don't have to deal with because I'm child-free: The state owns the children. I don't have to worry about any offspring in such a screwed up society as ours. Having children is expensive and will affect your cash-flow, toys, freedom, opportunity cost, etc. I'm turning 49 next month and am so happy that I'm child-free. Truly, if you want to know what life with children will be like then shadow some single mothers and single grandmothers for a few days. I talk to my mother weekly to get caught up on all of the BS that my nephew is doing and how it affects her life. After getting caught up I usually say "man, I'm so glad that I didn't have children!" My mom always says "yes, you are so lucky to be able to live a drama-free lifestyle."

My mother was crazy and my dad drunk himself to death early .. and I can not even blame him with the knowledge I have today.

My father was Chad and not at all a family guy and got trapped by my mother (guess how), quick marriage and at that time in rural catholic heartland divorce or separation was not on the table at all.

I have seen it all, from discussions to plates being thrown to physical violence, opposed to cliche it was never my father who hit her or hit back..

Of course, everything was his fault though.

The best part, if you would have met my mother you would have considered her serious wifey material, nice and cute, very empathic, a little bit shy but with humour, acting a bit submissive.

Perfect facade in public so she could play the victim, as soon as the door of the car or the house was closed she turned into a daemon instantly.

It was very early on that I decided that I will never ever live together with a woman or have kids. Then puberty hit but a few years later I was back to my old rules: no wife, no kids.

She still tries occasionally to shame me for her not having any grand-kids, completely unaware of herself and completely lacking any self-reflection.

That is why I did not even trust the few possible NAWALTS I met... who knows which spawn of Satan hides behind, waiting for release once you tied the knot.

I came to the conclusion that the only thing women are good for is fucking ... and banged escorts. Now monk.

Else, my garden is my joy and with only trees and perennials that require pruning once a year work is minimal. I also run 4 lawn mowing robots..

My reasoning is simple: I suspect this world is headed for a long, deep crisis, both socially and economically. A drive to equity will inevitably lead to a controlled economy, therefor an inefficient economy. See the USSR and early China for examples of these. It will not be a good place to be in. Why inflict that future onto a kid?
