Advice on a new laptop

I am a network engineer, and I run many businesses, procure tech, etc.

I personally own an older dell xps13. It’s got an i7, 8gb of ram and a 256gb ssd. It’s the 9333 model. I tossed a new battery in and am getting upwards of 3 hours. All in I think I’m under $350.

The asus zenbook is phenomenal for the price. But only if you want something light.

I can’t really stand laptops over 13-14 inches so I don’t ever buy them. I much prefer to get a cheap usb dock and run a monitor keyboard and mouse when I need the extra real estate.

Dell has been the best to me. Lenovo has teething issues but also has been good. I personally shy away from HP and Apple.

Acer is getting much better, i have enjoyed the swift 3 we bought recently. They are a little chunky, but good builds so far.

I am looking for a laptop as well. And mainly for light work like word, excel. My strategy is to buy the cheap $200-$300 ones. Don't bother about anything else as they are cheap. My last ones keyboard is half gone now, battery is screwed. And lasted around 3-4 years. Also, if Windows is not a compulsion, use linux. Saves a lot on resource consumption.

I dropped 1000 on my last laptop 2 years ago and now it can’t even play Civ6 on it. Can still do everything else though. Better off spending less imo.

Don't spend more than 500. I bought a laptop for $1000 and I barely use it. I frown everytime I look in my cabinet to see my fancy laptop just sitting there collecting dust.

I always get a Toshiba satellite pro. I think there are around $350 delivered on ebay.

Do you want it thin and light / small? Or do you not mind moving around with 15.6" 2.3kg machine? I'm assuming you're in America?

From a reliability point of view .. all my old Lenovo laptops still work, all in business use, running 9 hours a day at least (mostly with additional external monitors) or packed and thrown around in luggage, ...

If I were you I would aim for one of those Lenovo Thinkpad T or P series intended for business use, could be used if in good condition or refurbished to stay in budget. Some of these are (opposed to consumer laptops) even mil-spec standard.

Throw in a new SSD (Samsung is good imho) and a new HD (WD Red Series I have a dozen, very good and affordable) if it is an older machine and you are good.

Also, for these machines you can get almost anything as a spare part from Lenovo for quite some time and matte screens are standard.

Asus, Dell, toshiba. All pretty good, I've had some terrible experiences with hp durability as well so I stay away from them but the last Asus laptop I had just wouldn't die it still works after 5 years but I wanted an upgrade

The dell XPS got slimmer and nicer, but the old 9333 is still a great contender. I built one myself by buying the HDD version and upgrading it to ssd and new battery. Then on my second build (for a co worker) I found one that had the SSD already.

Some don’t need a new battery, it’s worth running it for a week and seeing the condition. I think the new battery was $35.

They are older, the only reasons to upgrade these days are performance and battery life. Many new laptops are getting 6-8 hours on a charge. But I’m always near power and prefer cheaper and lighter.

If you want a good bang for your buck - a used Thinkpad off ebay. They're built like little tanks, have good screens for text (important for business use), and the best laptop keyboards ever. They are not game machines (although can handle simple stuff). They often end up on ebay after coming off a company lease, so they were treated halfway decent in a business setting, and hold up well. Mine (a T420s) which I got like a year ago, was like $2000 new, and I picked my used one up for like $300.

Chances are it was the hard drive. Go SSD for your main storage -- cheapest way to do that is to by a raw SSD, do a mirror & then swap out the internal.

Get a virtual desktop from Amazon.

Then you have your desktop from anywhere, and you can add more CPU, RAM storage at will when needed.

My previous laptop was a $350 asus I used it for aroud 3 years it still runs fine but I upgraded to a HP envy x360 when it was $200 off right after Thanksgiving.

Whatever you get make sure it has a ssd hard drive, it makes a huge difference
