Advice on work ethics

You need to have goals, both personally and professionally.

These goals need to achievable in less than 5 years and be measurable.

Personally it might be saving money for something, or losing weight, or something else

Professionally it might be learning a new skill, getting that promotion, etc

Then you break the goals down into smaller tasks needed to achieve the goals, and work on them.

I do not believe there is a quick fix to the rut you find yourself in, I have been in that place many time, just coming out of one myself. This last one was a direct result of me finishing my last 5 year plan (took me 8 years to finish my 5 year plan) but once I did I kinda just drifted with no further goals or plan.

I am now putting together my next 5 year plan, not completed yet but I am already starting to feel more driven and motivated

Learn a trade.

You basically have two choices. Either work hard and get promoted or you switch careers. There are so many job opportunities and education possibilities in western countries that you should take advantage.

You could for example learn to program in your sparetime. It won´t be easy and will require a lot of work but the hard work will pay off in the end.

I am myself 33 and quit my job to study computer science. It is doable but you really have to quit your social life if you think about such a move.

Despite what mainstream media says, it's ok not to be stoked to go to work. If you're worried about burnout, you should find something worth saving for, like going back to school, buying land, or running for public office.

Imagine that future is possible, and then try to appreciate the challenges work gives you to get closer to it.

I got a bunch of motivation after I decided I wanted to FIRE. 80+ hrs for the past 2 months. I know it won't last, but every hour counts and gets me closer.

Pick up a second part time job, save all that pay to go to trade school. Read one book a week, set goals for personal development, use the library, the web, and find a mentor.
