Right now I’m on the ‘traditional’ path toward retirement. I have a small 401k that I contribute to when I can. Now that I’ve shed the mental bondage of having to spend money on women or children, the traditional path toward retirement will be far easier . . . way more money for me. But the whole thing still feels like part of that system . . . instead of being a slave to women and giving them all my money, I’m a slave to 401k. The thread about living off the grid inspired me . . . in theory, I could take that 401k money and make that happen for me right now, but then what do I do when my body starts failing?

I’m pushing 40 so this is more of a concern for me than it used to be. Traditional retirement to me allows you to enjoy your lifestyle until you run out of money, then you are stuck in a home and no longer in control of your own life, with no tools to earn money and work your way out of it. This is what I (and I’m guessing most people) fear. This community has lots of great ideas and smart people who are living in ways that appeal to me, so I thought I’d ask for the benefit of everyone. How do you plan on handling your retirement? Does anyone have any creative ideas for a life hack on retirement?
