IRL example:

HOME:

A) My dish washer machine still works after 7 years regular use (1x weekly). Wash some dishes by hand if only sandwich or sth like that, small quantities, coffee cup, glass of water etc. Check salt regularly and add every 2-4 mths before running a less laden/empty run to clean. Wash/wipe under water fatty dishes before putting in IMMEDIATELY BEFORE USE.

Wipe clean the clothes washing machine after use, clean filters regularly (quadropod hair COULD clog the drain, but doesn't). 1st thing I did when bought new about a year ago, was screw the lid off the top and opened water pump to see how it's done before use (basically because dry). Not long ago opened it for the 3rd time to clean the 'turbine blades' because filter does NOT catch all "white 2cm needles" from my dogminatrix that find their way in with my clothes. Works like a charm, no issues with water staying in.

B) A shared flat, not theirs, machines last about a year or so. Dish washer is suddenly a convenient place to hide dirty dishes. Leave them in there until dry, I guess, then run that washing cycle. What do you mean "When did you check and add salt the last time!?!??!!?". The sink, otoh, is "white" with dried 'water stone'.

Oh, look, washing machine (for about 4-5kg of clothes per wash round) is fucking filled with clothes - as in noone dares to open the door because it'll fill the whole room if opened. Checked filter, oh, look, all the water in the world. Never cleaned. Because not theirs. Clothes smell like marsh.

COMPUTERS:

A) 4x 1TB disk in NAS (2x 1TB mirror), 1gigabit LAN, "regularly" shut down for mechanical maintenance - clean vents because, again, muh beloved quadrodispensfur. Regularly backup backup (rsync). Movies and torrent folders cleaned up after consumption. Still have about 500GB free space with everything backbackuped.

B) We need a new computer, because no more space, 2x 2 TB and 1x 500GB disks (one failed, didn't replace yet, it's only been a year, apparently I'm impatient). Has also become loud and smells like burned plastic and weird temps. The front of the box is,... alive? Furry. Shut it down, vacuumed, brushed dust away with a brush, deleted "tmp" crap, it's suddenly running semi silent again (will change vent once they manage to buy replacement part - it's difficult, they say) and has plenty of space.

Then there's that one thing a colleague of mine once said, and I agree, "Voodoo". It works great until you want to present it, then it'll crash because Murphy and black magick.
