you could apply to many everyday for years and not run out as they're being replaced with most postings daily. Obviously some of these are looking for experienced folks, but the lower end certainly would be pleased with general computer skills.

Don't use the word tinker in an interview, really learn some coding skills, if you can create a website that showcases your skills and put that in your resume it will help, have something that shows you actually can create stuff with code, a lot of people "tinker" not as many really learn to code. I knew a guy had no college degree but was making 6 figures because he could code circles around all the college graduates and he was worth every penny too, he spent a lot of time teaching himself what he needed to know. One thing he did is he built a website from scratch, that showed off his javascript, .net, SQL and CSS and HTML skills, this goes a long way to showing you can actually build something from code and not just talk about it. Of course what type of coding you are interested in doing may determine what type of project you build.
