Thinking that documentary are more reliable than other things (and by the way, you can "prove a point" with any fictional work since it still tells a lot about how people see things and behave and about the culture related to it. See: the bible) actually tells a lot about you.

Next you're going to say that you can't prove a point using 50 shades "because it's just a movie "? What's important is the demographic and what it tries to sell you, among other things. You can learn from pretty much anything if you do it right, if to you the only "reliable" source for self-development is documentaries you're incredibly naïve and also also very short-minded. What is seen as "acceptable" in fiction tells a lot about our society, our people, our politics, etc at the time. That's called context and people's reaction to it say a lot.

If to you you can't learn from anything but documentaries, you're ridiculous and shouldn't learn anything at all (and I say that despite documentaries being what I watch the most, but it doesn't sound critical-minded AT.ALL.). You can learn different things from pretty much anything, one way or another.

Except that you're completely missing the point. And Picasso (despite the fact that I don't really like his work) is the perfect example of that. The point of Picasso's work isn't just that "he had a face". The art style is supposed to be a part of the message as well. To take one particular painting as an example as well as quoting the reasoning behind it:

This painting was shocking even to Picasso's closest artist friends both for its content and its execution. The subject matter of nude women was not in itself unusual, but the fact that Picasso painted the women as prostitutes in aggressively sexual postures was novel. Picasso's studies of Iberian and tribal art is most evident in the faces of three of the women, which are rendered as mask-like, suggesting that their sexuality is not just aggressive, but also primitive.

Same goes for cubism, etc. I agree that a ton of more modern "painting" are basically ridiculous and a scam (I have a pretty hard time with kasimir malevitch, as an example), but there is a meaning behind what you call just being crude. Minimalistic art has often been used to criticize consumerism, even it if just looks "crude" and meaningless to you. It isn't. You not seeing it because you don't look far enough doesn't change this.

Getting your experiences from life isn't a bad thing, but there is no reason to be limited to this. Not to mention that you don't actually have to agree about the core message of a work; a work can perfectly make you realize something it wasn't intended to to begin with (that's the very idea of applicability). This is the part that is important.

If you give a damn about an "argument with the ennemy" and what he thinks it's your own problem and no one else's. Well, also your "ennemy's" problem for being absolutely stupid, since you both cut yourselves out from the experience and knowledge of millions of people over time because "you know better". Not to mention that if you want to go on that road, then your own experiences are also pointless, since they are heavily tainted by your own subjectivity as well. And thus not "real".

Knowledge is absolutely everywhere and that's the point. The idea isn't to eat and regurgitate everything. That's not knowledge. That's just pure stupidity. It's to build around it in order to create your own interpretation and your own system around it. Not to look for ready-made food.

And saying that it has no bearing on life is, once again, stupid as well. When something is common enough it retranscribes cultural ideas and a context and a meaning. To keep anime as an example, you'll find a ton of traditional japanese values in it, that don't come out of nowhere since it targets a crowd living by these values and share this past; something very real. There's a reason feminists and SJW are so annoying about censoring and appropriating male works. Our culture and our world are directly connected, one existing only because of the other (although sometimes in a non-direct way, like shocking art existing as a counter-reaction to an hypersensitive society to give one example), thus giving them the illusion of existing. A story has an author, who is a very real person with its own story, not a computer writing out of nowhere.

"Absolute knowledge" doesn't exist; even in science, the first rule is to accept the fact that you can and will possibly be wrong at some time, otherwise it's not science. What is important is the coherent system you build yourself and fix over time, and there is no reason to restrict your sources as long as it is logical, we're not talking about accepting everything a work tells you as true, but a work can make YOU have an outside-context realization. Once again, look at the bible. A work of fiction. And yet, a lot of what is used in it are things that got "rediscovered" by the red pill thousand of years afterwards. Fictional works bear the marks of the reality of their time. They were written by very real humans, with very real experiences.
