Female Praying Mantis do the same, as do Black Widows, Jumping spiders etc.

Many females in the animal world will devour a male before he can even mate with them or she'll let him mate or start mating then do him in.

On Planet Earth II they showed a male polar bear and his mate; for two weeks he had to defend against all other takers - and there were many. By the end of it all he was covered in blood, could barely walk and was starved. I have to ask if it was all worth it.

On Planet Earth: Dynasty's, a male chimp, the alpha "David" was mauled at night by younger males vying to be the alpha in a sneak attack that nearly killed him. The group, his group, left him for dead. He regained enough strength to fond them again, and still had to deal with the new "attempting to be" alpha. When it was all said and done David came out on top and remained alpha - but lost more then just pride - he was severely wounded during the former attack. Again, I have to ask if all of that shit is even worth it. Other males, especially the older chimps didn't give a shit about being the alpha let alone breeding and they were healthy, did normal chimp shit and never had to worry about shit.

As men, we have a lot less to lose.

A good ol dose of nature makes me appreciate how the interaction between men and women is, even if it's rarely "fair" for men - it could always be worse.
