We live in a society of abundance, where people want more, more, more... I can't help but think that this culture is fuelling women's hypergamous demands: that women want a man who can provide them with a luxury lifestyle that would be the envy of other women. It is natural for women to constantly compare themselves to other women, and to judge and rectify any perceived lifestyle discrepancies. In this constant war, men must be able to keep up with a woman's incessant demands, and be able to rise to the constant challenge to perform. In a communist society perhaps this is not so much the case. In these societies the resources of the state are centralized and collectivised so that materialism is heavily suppressed. This means firstly that most people share the same lot in life, and that secondly, women never have the chance to experience a luxurious lifestyle that they will then constantly demand from their beta-whipped husbands. I wonder in some ways if the problems we men face now are a result of this capitalism-on-steroids, and whether a more simple lifestyle would mitigate this. At any rate, as we as a society sink further and further into materialism it seems unfortunate that men will always have to keep up with the demands of their partners.
