As a technical support specialist do you keep wanting to technical work for life?

I think PMPs tend to stay more technical unless they are a large organization where their job is solely management of projects. BAs tend to do less technical work, but build the cohesion of the business needs with the technical people.

I'm not in either, but have interacted with both roles. My assessment, which could be off base or incorrect is that business analysts must develop a narrow, targeted focus in some (one or a few) business domain(s) or area(s) of specialization whereas a Project Manager is a set of general skills that can be applied to many business or technical domains. That said, having project management experience in specific domains is often seen as a valuable skill/differentiation.

I know many people that have started in business or technical specializations move into project management roles over the course of their careers; I've seen comparatively few go the opposite way.

Consider the roles and responsibilities of each, what is needed and determine which is a better fit for you; I'd also do some research on the number, types of job openings and compensation packages.

Generally speaking, I think business analysts in high demand, complex domain requires more specialization and deep knowledge whereas project management skills are more general and can be applied to many domains or combinations of domains. Business analysis is more specialized in domains vs Project Management.

Also, look into and be aware of AI in both roles, now, planned and potential. Many domains are ripe for AI automation vs project management which is more general, however I can also see AI applied to project management. Something to consider for the future.
