Cats or dogs?

Go for a middle-aged cat or older dog. Just young enough to still chase a ball around, but just old enough to get tired in 10 minutes then sleep for 10 hours.

Young cats are 100x more energetic and need activities or they go crazy.

Young dogs need daily exercise or they’ll tear shit up.

Local shelters are full of older pets that need a place to live.

Cats are higher maintenance

What the fuck? Cats are pretty chill, I like both cats and dogs but slightly prefer cats due to them not needing as much attention. Just give it water, food, litter and it's good on its own.

Cats require a whole lot less maintenance, couldn't give less of a fuck if you are home as long as it got food and water. The dog on the other hand will need a whole lot more company. I wouldn't go with either, grew up with both and sick of it. If I had to pick I would go for cat out of convenience.

Cats are DEFINITELY lower maintenance than dogs. Sure if you keep them "indoors" 100% of the time (city home/apartment) then you're going to have to clean out the litter box on basically a daily basis...

But at least they "crap" without you having to be DIRECTLY involved -- "take them for a walk" and/or having to carry a "pooper scooper" and/or "baggies" to pick up their shit.

Same with general "exercise" and even "play" activities... toss the cat a catnip toy and they'll occupy/entertain themselves -- a dog? You're gonna have to be actively involved in playing "fetch" (and walks, etc).

If you'd be leaving the dog at home alone during the day, then yeah, a cat would be a much better idea.

However if you're living in a small apartment... I've always found it just as cruel to keep a curious, territorial creature like a cat trapped in such a small space (unless they've been rescued from the street), so there's that to consider too.

What about a ferret? :) EDIT: ferret not serious suggestion, mind you!

Cats are easy. Just need to fill food bowl and empty litter box. I hate cats though. My roomate has 2. One is cool, he is outside 90% of the time and is skitzo around people. The other one won't shut the fuck up. Just meows all fucking day.

A dog is more of a companion. More beneficial relationship but takes more work and time.

Its not just only cat or dog. Also the breed is very important and their personality. Cats require low maintenance and are going their own way too. If you have a garden, theyre mostly outside to protect it from other cats. Theyre natural born killers. If you want to get rid of birds, butterflies and anything in between xD. Provide them high quality food and their own spaces inside the house (high position) is mostly enough to keep them happy.

Dogs are very good as a natural alarm system. They bark alot and need a leader often. Breeds are also important but every dog has to go out 2-3 times a day. Even if you have property. Its good if youre lazy and lack of sports but you have to be a good leader and socialize the dog with humans and other dogs. So its possible that you will meet alot of females.

Both of them want to do something important and want to work. Just in a different way.

Got dog and cat. Cat is significantly less work and worry.. if you intend to travel/ be out a lot, a cat is better than a dog.
