It could easily be the way the mom bring value to the household. She might actually take pride that she, alone, feed her entire family.

Maybe they split duties? Does she go up on the roof to help him fix a leak? Maybe, but probably not.

Maybe they have a deal. She handles the kitchen, and he does maintenance on the house and car. That's the arrangement my grandparents had.
