I am 25 years old and I am currently studying a BSc (Hons) in psychology (I will graduate in 2018), it has been a passion of mine since I was a child. I have taken a placement at a local mental health hospital and some volunteer work at a suicide line. Although the profession in itself is amazing and I am really happy with it, it is also run mostly by females! The director of the volunteer branch I work is a female who has got no clue whatsoever on how to run a place without using her genitals as an excuse to her incompetence, not to mention the other volunteers are mostly medium class women whose lack of interest towards the callers is heinous, they basically use volunteer work to prove to their friends that they have a place in society because "they care" when in fact they refuse to take male callers seriously, because apparently men are disrespectful towards women when they notice the female voice on the other side of the phone and during a 4 hour shift they spend 2 of them eating, chatting away and going to the toilet constantly. When they finish their shift they like to gather together and laugh about the callers' problems and compare it to their personal lives and how much better they are!

Now at the hospital where I am training as part of my placement year, the director is also a woman and although she is not as incompetent since she works hard to run that place properly, I have seen her using her status to emasculate male coworkers, demanding the use of sharp-looking clothing for men (i.e.: suit) while the women can go to work in yoga pants and flip flops. Also, since there are muslim women who needs treatment, she makes it clear to us men that we should "ignore" or even "pretend we know nothing about it" because apparently muslim women in need of mental help can only be helped by other women, even though most of these patients have never made any mention or demand towards their therapist's gender.

Although my love for the psychological aspect of human demeanour has not been diminished per se, I have to admit I am very scared of what my future is going to look like when I graduate and start working in the area, taking in consideration what I have shared previously and other things which I did not disclose, I am constantly thinking if I made a bad decision by choosing this area rather than leaving it as a hobby.
