My uncle would drive 20 minutes every other day to go to a casino and withdraw money. He would play cheap slots (which he didn't even enjoy) just so the staff would see him playing, and pocket the rest of the money withdrawn to hide.

After a year of doing this he had taken nearly all the savings he had, the workers at the casino all recognized him as a regular, and he claimed his "gambling problem" was the reason the savings had all but vanished in divorce court.

He waited a year after the divorce before slowly depositing the money into his own account and had anyone asked (they never did) his string of luck at the casino had changed.

I thought he was crazy when I found out about this from my Dad. Now 10+ years on... that man is a fucking genius

Develop a “gambling problem”, take money out of the ATM and stash it somewhere. Buy a few scratch off tickets with cash to make it look like you spent all the money

The biggest problem men have is they feel it’s their duty to provide and women exploit this. You are about to move from one household to two. Your ex will want to ensure her current living standards are maintained in perpetuity and she will use the kids as a lever. As men we are expected to solve the problem she will use this too. Her starting position is she keeps everything you move into a bedsit and work harder so that her split after divorce is the same as before divorce.

Firstly reduce your liabilities and assets as the court will be keen to push assets to her and liabilities to you. So if you have debt and savings use the savings to clear your debt. Reduce your living standards to pay your debt and make sure you pay it from the joint account. Your current income will be used to calculate an income transfer for up to 21 years and in some cases regardless of whether you actually earn it. If you work overtime stop it immediately stating you are suffering from stress. Again men are expected to man up don’t. Go and see your doctor get stress medication ask at work about reducing hours or look for an easier job on less money.

Explain to your wife your marriage problems and work problems are causing stress so you aim to improve your marriage by down sizing. Do you have cars on finance trade them in buy clunkers for cash, less depreciation less insurance no finance. If you live near to work get a bike. Stop spending money no holidays, no new clothes no eating out, stop drinking, no hobbies boats guns bikes or fishing. If you are thinking of divorce she is planning on it. With luck her much reduced lifestyle will push her to make a move. See the other comments of syphoning off cash. This is a 18 month project. By the time you arrive at divorce court you want all joint debt eliminated, a hidden cash pile, minimal assets other than a downsized house, you on long term meds with your meds bills as a legitimate reduction in your net income, and your net income reduced by a minimum of 50%.

Another cool play is to liquidate the family house on the premise of an upgrade. Once the house is sold get her to rent in the short term so that you have flexibility to move with a cash offer to get a bargain. Use the cash to pay off all debt. Divorce her before getting a new house.

Find a good lawyer and take legal advice about your finance situation.

I hope you don't have any joint account or neither does she has access to all your personal accounts.

Whatever may happens in the family court, don't overreact anything and you're just only another victim in their eyes since everything's stacked against you which is nothing personal. It is the way it is against all men when it comes to divorce.

By the time you see divorce coming, she has likely been planning her escape for some time, so it's probably too late really.

Secreting money won't really help.

The judge is going to be looking at your income and at least a year of your bank statements, so if, for example, the judge decides you have stashed money somehow, they will just adjust the division of assets to reflect that.

Gambling losses?

They will just give her more of whatever else you guys own to compensate.

Don't leave the house... even if it sucks... and it will.

Only hope is if you can prove she's unfit as a parent... tough sell though.

See my comments below re money. Now how to deal with her. Let her do the running learn from women what do they do? They say “something must be done!” While expecting a man to pop up and do it. They use duplicity and you must do the same. So be loving and supportive but fail. So see below reduce income, slash spending and debt. She will be arguing in court that you gave her a lifestyle and she has a right to maintain it. So you must minimise that lifestyle asap so that when you finally come to court you have the lifestyle of a frugal hermit.

Be loving but useless many women argue in court he was always working and neglected me. This is whilst omitting that she demanded a lifestyle that forced the work commitment required to pay for it. Play this reduce your hours change your job reduce your income. A woman demands time with her children regardless of the problems the reduced income causes. Play this angle say stuff like by reducing work I am rewarding my family with more me time. Who needs expensive holidays let’s make a campfire in the garden. Become financially inept and she will demand separate finances.

Essentially act like a woman. In a marriage men work harder and harder whilst women spend and Mount more and more burdens on men. Every time you rest she will nag you on new furniture required, car to be upgraded or a dress neede for a social event. I.e. she acts like a child with no recourse for her overspending or mistakes. Use this against her. Explain how better life is with you halving your hours, that she can certainly get her new dress with what’s left of your wages at the end of the month oh dear we have spent it all on potatoes. Maybe next month, or perhaps she could work more now that you have more time to babysit.

take small amounts of money out over a long period of time. find safe place to stash the cash. another option is to buy bullion jewelry but it can be flashy, it's an easy way to move assets out of a country as you don't have to declare its' value for customs, just wear it on your person when you travel, and stash it in your destination country, most countries with extradition treaties only enforce criminal charges, not civil.

That said, talk to an attorney, take your time, don't disclose this to anyone especially your wife or kids; go on with life as usual, while you plan and take steps for your exit strategy.

A good divorce attorney will tell you what you can do or can't do according to the laws where you live, what your options are, and how to protect your assets. If you have significant wealth you may want to consult an accountant. There are forensic accountants that can trace all your hidden assets, and everything you do, and her attorney will use this if needed, and you'll get to pay for it.

My best advice...lawyer up right now. If you are going to pull the trigger stop talking to her and do all talking through your attorney. Do not fight with her at all. Do not raise your voice or anything. STAY AWAY as much as possible.
